Bone Mineral Densitometry

Osteoporosis poses a serious threat to 28 million Americans - 80% of whom are women. Half of all women past menopause are at risk of developing osteoporosis… and one out of three will fracture. We are pleased to offer DXA bone densitometry service - the "gold standard" of bone assessment methods - for patients in Northern Michigan. The equipment, Hologic QDR4500 SL has been enhanced with the latest software releases available (Delphi) and can also provide studies to assess vertebral health.

Our physicians who are interpreting the studies are certified clinical densitometrists. We also have a registered radiologic technologist with certification in densitometry performing the scans. Our providers are credentialed and have extensive experience with Bone Density testing. Our physicians, who have provided these services to the community since 1996, are committed to providing high quality studies with personal, caring treatment. Having access to the same equipment will allow us to provide comparative studies and accurate diagnoses.

There are two types of Bone Density studies provided. A diagnostic central DXA study scans the hip, spine and forearm, and is suggested for those patients under the age of 65 (or patients with known low bone density or osteoporotic fractures). A peripheral DXA study of the forearm is also available as screening for patients in the "low-risk" category over 65 years of age. A newer service, called IVA ("Instant Vertebral Assessment") can also provide an assessment of vertebral health. Your physician or health care provider will order the appropriate test for your particular situation.

Additionally, Drs. Maureen Doull and Melanie Manary provide consultative services for patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Reasons for consultation may include deciding among the various treatment options for osteopenia or osteoporosis, ruling out secondary causes of osteoporosis, or declining bone density despite antiresorptive therapy. Your physician or health care provider can refer you for this service.

Our staff is dedicated to meeting the needs of your patient and will assist in whatever manner possible. We have reserved a number of schedule slots in order to allow "same-day" appointments for the convenience of patients - please call for availability.
